Covering your tush

Attorney Melvin Belli – the so-called “King of Torts” – takes on the San Francisco Giants 63 years ago today and wins a breach-of-contract lawsuit against the team.

Belli, a Giants season ticket holder, successfully argues the box seat he purchases in 1960 at Candlestick Park does not have, as he says the Giants promise, radiant heat.

Belli claims the seat, which costs him $1,597, is supposed to, well, keep his derriere warm during Candlestick’s cold summer nights.

In an unrelated matter, six years later in 1968, Belli is the guest star in a most forgettable episode in the original Star Trek called “And the Children Shall Lead.”

No lawsuits are filed during the filming of that episode, although fans of the classic sci-fi series may have grounds to sue him for entertainment malpractice.
